POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Business Finance Officer (BFO) team is comprised of the Line of Business CFO’s that provide Executive Management Team and Business Areas with decision support through the use of management reporting, future-focused analytics, predictive modeling capabilities, decision tools and problem-solving support to help drive our businesses financial planning, budgeting and forecasting requirements; and supports the CFP&A team to achieve accurate allocation of expenses and revenue alignment to corporate entities, product lines and institutions.


The Finance Manager position provides their respective Relationship Manager and the Management Team with decision support through the use of management reporting, future-focused analytics, predictive modeling capabilities, decision tools and problem-solving support to help drive our businesses financial planning, budgeting and forecasting requirements; and supports the CFP&A team to achieve accurate allocation of expense alignment to Product Lines and Legal Entities.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  

Day-to-day support to the respective BFO relationship manager.  Budgeting, planning, forecasting, analysis as well as financial stewardship and counsel.  Present and clearly articulate the financial results of the business area as well as provide variance commentary to business partners.  Develop models / tools for early identification of financial trends and drivers for use across business segments.  Collaborate with business areas to develop operational and financial health metrics and measures.  Incorporates productivity and continuous improvement methodologies to ensure long term success. 


Management/Leadership Responsibility: 


Works independently with minimal day-to-day instructions, receives general guidance and review on new assignments. Provide feedback and guidance to help strengthen specific knowledge/skills needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem. Provides input to performance appraisals and development plans during the annual and interim performance evaluations process. Recommend and implement changes to methods of performing work. Provide input to policy to manage risk and exposure to the organization. Assigned to special/unique/high profile projects with functional/firm wide scope requiring specialized knowledge and experience.


Budget Responsibility:


Supports the RM for budgeting, forecasting, analysis and reporting activities for their respective business areas, including internal management reports and other financial highlights used for performance reporting, corporate scorecard metrics and other needs as defined.  Ensures RM and management has accurate information and estimates to make informed decisions.  Ensures ongoing development of underlying data management systems and reporting tools used for management reporting and analysis. Develops production of reports analyzing measurements to evaluate business operations and unit performance. 


Impact:


Develops, maintains and strengthens relationships with key business partners to enable effective development of budgets, operations and product planning, and forecast development.  Networks with the area Leadership Team to provide key analysis and data for business decision making.  Regularly interacts with executives, peers and business unit managers.  Interactions frequently involve special skills such as negotiating with management, attempting to influence senior level leaders regarding matters of importance to the organization or presenting budgets, forecasts or other relevant data.  Confers with executives, peers and other managers to discuss business activities relative to process, timing, policies, procedures, and management reports to resolve problems and recommend solutions.  Makes decisions that have high impact to the organization. 


Serves as SME for the financial oversight and management of the business group. Provides advice on initiatives across the business area. May lead efforts to develop reporting and control procedures for the business area. Serves as SME regarding the business area’s budgeting and planning processes and reports. (e.g. Budgets, Financial Plans, Scorecards and Action Plans).  Mentors others in the development of financial evaluations and assessments of business opportunities / alternatives and provide comprehensive analysis documentation that assists in decision making to achieve leadership objectives.


Problem Solving: 


Focuses on the accounting, financial planning, analysis and reporting in a business area.  Develops and maintains financial reporting structures, account structures, procedures, audit controls, etc. Ensures optimal resource utilization through cost-benefit analysis, scenario planning, and other analytical techniques.  Analytical skills are required to pull business relevant commentary from the financial data.  Must have the ability to problem solve medium to high complex situations.


Functional Knowledge: 


The position requires a strong foundation of Finance and Accounting coupled with experience supporting a particular business or support function from a financial standpoint.  Knowledge of Broker Dealer industry trends and product set is highly beneficial.  This knowledge is used in the preparation of budgets and recommendations to local management as well as identifying and making recommendations to local management regarding areas of concern and any actions required. 


Business or Industry Expertise: 


The position requires a strong foundation of general financial services industries and the particular business or support function industry.  Working knowledge across the industry is critical when facing off with various stakeholders in an advisory capacity and providing the analytics to support decision making. 


Interactions: 


This position regularly interacts with executives, peers and business unit managers.  Interactions frequently involve special skills such as negotiating with management, attempting to influence senior level leaders regarding matters of importance to the organization or presenting budgets, forecasts or other relevant data.  Confers with executives, peers and other managers to discuss business activities relative to process, timing, policies, procedures, and management reports to resolve problems and recommend solutions. 



 

Required Skills

 

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field

• 5+ years of Financial Planning and Analysis experience with a strong

  understanding of financial statements and elements that drive those, with the

  ability to analyze and interpret complex financial information

• Experience with Hyperion, ESSBASE, Peoplesoft financial systems, and MS

  Office

 

Desired Skills

 

• Advanced Business degree desirable in Finance, Accounting, Economics or

  Math

• Experience in the broker dealer insurance industry or financial services preferred

• CPA or CMA a plus

• 1-3 years in leadership position managing teams

• Ability to work well under pressure, meet agreed upon deadlines and manage

  multiple tasks concurrently

• A proactive self-starter with excellent interpersonal, organizational, and

  leadership skills

• Strong verbal/written communication skills at senior management level

• Must be able to work independently, as well as in a collaborative team

  environment

• Ability to work in a matrix management structure and to influence key partners

  and business unit leaders

• Critical thinker and self-starter who is willing to work proactively to identify key

  business priorities, opportunities and threats, and work across teams to

  implement necessary solutions

• Strong relationship management, team building, presentation and

  communications skills that establish trust, credibility and respect
