Position Summary:

The Associate General Counsel provides high quality privacy legal advice and data management services through legal research and drafting; interacts with internal business partners relating to first line-of-defense controls and with control functions colleagues relating to second line-of-defense activities.

 

Key Responsibilities and duties:

  • Serves as information privacy resource to the organization for all privacy related issues
  • Monitors and provides updates on regulatory changes, including those related to data privacy, that impact TIAA’s products, services and business activities
  • Maintains current knowledge and inventory of federal and state laws and regulations, with a focus on privacy and data security
  • Assists the business with the development and implementation of metrics, privacy risk assessments, and other Enterprise Privacy Program requirements in partnership with the Compliance privacy SME
  • Collaborates with the information security area to ensure alignment between information security and the Enterprise Privacy Program
  • Researches and addresses, under limited supervision, legal privacy issues, including providing legal advice on financial products and services, and regulatory, legislative and litigation developments
  • Participates in or leads small project teams for business unit area initiatives
  • Assesses complex multi-issue matters, generally requiring cross-area coordination
  • Works directly with assigned business area staff and develops ongoing working relationship(s) with key business area staff 
  • Presents to and works with business area leadership 
  • Works directly with outside counsel on matters pertaining to assigned unit area; discusses and manages outside counsel fee negotiations on matter by matter basis



QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Required
  • JD
  • 3+ years of privacy experience as a licensed attorney
Desired
  • 10+ years of legal experience as a licensed attorney
  • Legal experience in GLBA, FCRA, CAN-SPAM, TCPA, and/or CCPA
  • CIPP/US certifications
  • CIPP/M
  •  International Legal Experience including GDPR
  • Law experience relating to financial privacy and individual data
  • Experience in financial sector/products and familiarity with HIPAA/employment privacy laws
